    Ed Quinn, who plays Nathan Stark (nice coincidence) of Scifi channel's Eureka, would be my current choice. He has the Tony Stark look and the chops to pull the roll off. Downey would be ok, but definitely not in my top 10.

      I think we'll just have to wait and see. He wouldn't have been my first choice either. then again Michael Keaton wouldn't have been mine for batman either and he pulled that off pretty well.

        Definitely. I've had to learn a new level of patience when watching things from my childhood adapted for the screen. This strip from PVP sums it up pretty well.

          Two reasons this sets well with me: 1) Tom Cruise had been lobbying to play this role for years, and I've had it up to HERE with his wingnut jackassery. 2) Downey Jr. should be able to NAIL the "hero struggling with alcoholism/addiction" bit. Now, just so long as the armor effects don't suck...
