I haven't read the books (my fiance is the one that's obsessed with the franchise), but after watching the first movie and enjoying it, I have to say... without reading the books, the movies are the most random, unthought out, confusing movies I have ever seen in my life.
95% of the movie, she had to tell me why there was a random person who was suddenly so significant... or why some character randomly had this power they didn't previously have.
I know you can just as easily say, "read the books", but usually when someone directs a movie based on a book, they at least attempt to make it understandable for those of us who might not have read the books.
The Green Mile is one of the best examples I can think of where they took a book and made the movie a mirror image of the words. I was just left confused with these movies.

Just my two cents.
