At age 65, Francis Ford Coppola is an elder statesman of American film, a successful producer, and a pretty good vintner to boot. He's also the writer-director of "Youth Without Youth," his first personal project in nearly a decade, which he discusses in this Propeller interview.

Sorry about that. Like I said, it was a roundtable format, which limited the number of questions I could ask. But please do submit some questions for the next two interviews, since those will be one-on-one and I can keep Q-and-Aing 'til the cows come home.

Well I was disappointed about my wine question but I learned to live with it :-)

[and was glad to see wine mentioned in the blurb!]

I like Coppola! He could get himself bankrolled over and over for blockbuster pics and here he is, totally credibly, thumbing his nose at the mainstream and BIG bucks, espousing creativity, new technology and following personal interests into uncharted territory. Mircea Eliade is a very interesting writer who wrote amongst many great works a very passable text on alchemy, for example.

Not only that but going to Rumania to shoot is still pretty hardcore - its the least developed of the former Communist countries that lie in the bidy of Europe. Even Bucharest, though a beautiful city, physically resembling Paris, is rife with wild dogs and a generation of lost glue-sniffing street kids.

More power to his elbow and may his wine-cup overflow! I'll drink to that at lunch today but it will be a marvellous unpasteurised organic lager!

Yes, gama. I went to his winery. My brother was their Master Sommalier at Rubicon (his restaurant co-owned also by Robin Williams, and DeNiro). It's also Mr. Coppolas' gnocchi recipe that I use personally, if/when I make my own - it's really so easy and smaller bite sizes cook better!

        I enjoyed the interview.

"Coppola: ... Two hundred years from now, maybe we'll see movies that can actually get inside a person's head."

That may be interesting too. (Although, my mind is sometimes like a bad neighborhood, you may want to go there.)

Yeah seriously James, this is an awesome interview, Coppola is the man and that is an understatement.

Hi Spadecaller. I'm sure a visit to your mind would be very congenial. Stepping into Tom Cruise's cerebellum might be another matter entirely.

"I'm waiting twenty years, and only hope that I'm alive to hear what Youth Without Youth really was"

I like that quote, too. YWY sounds very interesting. I recently saw the Godfather series for the first time. (Not sure why I never did...) Bowled over.

I also admire Coppola's tendency to take the long view. As for the Godfather franchise: the first one is great, the second one is greater. Can anybody think of another series that tops itself in this way? (Unfortunately the third Godfather film represented a steep drop from its predecessor.)

I enjoyed the interview as well, and appreciated the link back to the original Godfather review for perspective. Nice job James!

I also think that Mr. Coppola's point of view on making movies is quite refreshing, and wish him the best with "Youth Without Youth".

Thanks to Tom, Tim, Corey, and evilgenius. To be honest, I think "Youth Without Youth" is a pretty problematic film--the images are beautiful, but the plot and dialogue are frequently a shambles. Still, Coppola's rejuvenated enthusiasm for filmmaking is an inspiration, and I look forward to his next low-budget outing.

I have been to his winery before.

It is really neat. He has his Acadeny Awards on display and other props and things from his movies.

              The building is amazing.

This all reminds me of the amazing fact that I still haven't seen "Heart of Darkness."

                Someday... someday..
